DeKalb County, Georgia (December 31, 2025) – Two people were injured in a DeKalb County semi-truck accident along Interstate 285 just before Interstate 20.

DeKalb County officials are saying that the collision took place around 7:00 AM on Tuesday. The two semi-trucks collided in the roadway for undetermined reasons.

The force of the impact scattered debris across the roadway, blocking multiple lanes of traffic. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims.

Both truck drivers were taken to the hospital to receive treatment for their injuries. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for DeKalb County Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license. They are expected to operate their vehicles with a great deal of care to avoid accidents. According to GA Code § 40-6-49, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” Truck companies should take several measures to prevent accidents.

  • Training: Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers receive extensive training. Operating a commercial truck is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle.
  • Maintenance: All trucks should be routinely inspected and well maintained. Failing to maintain a truck could lead to a catastrophic failure of critical component parts.
  • Route Planning: Truck companies should carefully plan the routes that their drivers take. These routes should eliminate as many left turns as possible.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle in their own lane of travel, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends another vehicle. Liability for a collision could extend beyond any driver deemed to be at fault. For example, the company that any truck driver was working for could also be liable for a crash. Employers are typically liable for the wrongful actions of their employees who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.

Steps to Take After DeKalb County Truck Accidents

Many people are seriously injured or killed every year in accidents involving commercial trucks. According to the IIHS, “The number of people who died in large truck crashes was 38% higher in 2023 than in 2009, when it was the lowest it has been since the collection of fatal crash data began in 1975. The number of truck occupants who died was 58% higher than in 2009.” Certain steps should be taken after any collision involving a commercial vehicle.

  • Medical Treatment: Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Many of the injuries associated with a serious collision are not going to be immediately obvious.
  • Evidence Preservation: Evidence related to the crash should be preserved. This will include photos that were taken and any police report that was created.
  • Legal Review: Any person injured in a truck accident should seek the guidance of an experienced Georgia truck accident attorney. An attorney can examine the unique facts of your case free of cost and let you know what your legal options are.

The vast majority of truck accidents are preventable. In many situations, they often involve drivers that fail to follow safety guidelines. Part of the problem is that many truck companies push their drivers to complete routes on unrealistic time schedules. In fact, one in ten truck drivers involved in a fatal crash reported feeling pressure from their carriers. Any person injured in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
