Motorcyclist Killed in Cobb County Semi-Truck Accident

COBB COUNTY, GEORGIA (January 10, 2026) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in a Cobb County semi-truck accident by the intersection of South Cobb Drive and Interstate 285.

Cobb County officials are saying that the collision took place around 3:00 p.m. on Monday. A semi-truck was heading northbound on South Cobb Drive when it made a left turn into the path of a 2005 Suzuki SV650 motorcycle.

The driver of the motorcycle was unable to avoid the collision and hit the right side of the truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim.

Sadly, the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. A full investigation into the Cobb County semi-truck accident remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Cobb County Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license. They are expected to operate with a great deal of caution to avoid collisions. This is due in part to the fact that trucks can weigh 80,000 pounds and are incredibly dangerous in the event of a crash. According to GA Code § 40-6-71, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road, or driveway shall yield the right of way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard.” Truck companies should take several measures to prevent collisions.

  • Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers are well trained. Driver inexperience remains a major cause of truck accidents.
  • Truck companies should ensure that all of their vehicles are periodically inspected and well maintained.
  • Truck companies must comply with all hours-of-service regulations. Truck drivers can become dangerously fatigued if they are allowed to work beyond their scheduled hours.

If a truck driver makes a left turn into the path of a motorcycle or other vehicle, they could be held at fault for the collision. Their employer could also be held at fault if they were working at the time of the crash. Generally speaking, employers can be liable for the wrongful actions of their workers who are operating within the course of their job duties. However, truck companies will normally hire their truck drivers as independent contractors to limit their legal exposure.

Steps to Take After Cobb County Truck Accidents

Trucks account for a relatively small portion of the total number of vehicles on the roadway. But they are still involved in a high number of fatal collisions every year. Young truck drivers are more likely to be involved in collisions. According to the FMCSA, “Of the 5,760 drivers of large trucks involved in fatal crashes in 2022, 420 (7 percent) were 25 years of age or younger, and 406 (7 percent) were 66 years of age or older. In comparison, 5 (2 percent) of the 211 drivers of buses in fatal crashes were 25 years of age or younger, and 37 (18 percent) were 66 years of age or older.” Several actions should be taken after any truck accident.

  • The work status of the truck driver should be determined. It matters whether or not a truck driver was acting as an employee or an independent contractor.
  • Photos of the accident site should be carefully reviewed. These photos could help piece together what may have led up to a crash.
  • Victims should seek medical treatment as early as possible. Failing to seek medical treatment can cause health and legal complications.
  • The family of any person who died in a truck accident should seek the guidance of a team with experience in tort claims.

A fully loaded semi-truck can take the length of two football fields to come to a stop. These vehicles can be extremely dangerous when they are not operated safely. Despite this, truck carriers routinely push their drivers to complete delivery schedules on unrealistic timelines. An estimated 10% of truck drivers involved in fatal collisions reported feeling under pressure from their carrier. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
