Truck Driver Killed In Candler County Truck Accident on I-16

UPSON COUNTY, GEORGIA (January 16, 2026) – A driver was injured in an Upson County semi-truck accident on State Route 36.

Upson County officials are saying that the accident took place around 6:20 AM on Tuesday. A tractor-trailer truck was facing west in the eastbound lanes of traffic at the intersection with Willis Road.

That driver was attempting to back their vehicle onto a road to make a delivery. At the same time, a Ford F150 traveling from the opposite direction approached the top of the hill where the truck driver was located.

That driver ended up colliding with the side of the pickup truck. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim.

He was taken to Atrium Navicent Medical Center to receive treatment.

Liability for Upson County Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers must operate with a great deal of care to avoid collisions. They must be particularly cautious when backing up at any location. Pursuant to GA Code § 40-6-240, “(a) A driver shall not back a vehicle unless such movement can be made with safety and without interfering with other traffic. (b) A driver of a vehicle shall not back a vehicle upon any shoulder or roadway of any controlled-access highway.” Truck drivers should take several actions to avoid causing collisions.

  • Truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns or backing into any area.
  • Truck drivers should use their horns when necessary to alert pedestrians and drivers of their intentions.
  • Truck drivers must continuously scan the road ahead of them for potential hazards.

If a truck driver makes an unsafe backing or turning movement into the path of another vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. Liability for the collision may extend beyond any truck driver deemed to be at fault. For example, if a truck driver was working as an employee at the time of a crash, their employer could be held at fault. In general, employers can be liable for the wrongful actions of their workers.

Common Injuries Associated With Semi-Truck Accidents

Many people are killed or seriously injured in accidents with commercial trucks each year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 5,375 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 8.4% decrease from 2022 but a 43% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is down 8% from 2022, but up 22% in the last 10 years.” The victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Accident victims may sustain major lacerations all over their body.
  • A number of truck accident survivors suffer broken bones in their arms, legs, and torso.
  • Many people involved in truck accidents sustained traumatic brain injuries.

Even after the physical injuries associated with an accident heal, victims may be left with long-term psychological trauma. This may manifest through anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
