Truck Driver Killed In Candler County Truck Accident on I-16

COLQUITT COUNTY, GEORGIA (March 9, 2026) – A Colquitt County Sheriff’s deputy was injured in a semi-truck accident on GA 35 by Southside Dr.

Colquitt County officials are saying that the accident took place by the hospital in Moultrie. The deputy was traveling down the road when his vehicle was broadsided by a semi-truck.

It remains unclear if the deputy had his lights and sirens on at the time of the collision. Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim.

He was transported to a hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries. The driver of the semi remained at the scene and cooperated with police.

Liability for Colquitt County Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid collisions. This requires that they travel at a safe speed at all times. According to GA Code § 40-6-180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing.” There are many different factors that could contribute to a semi-truck accident.

  • Truck accidents often involve drivers that are less experienced.
  • Truck accidents are more likely to occur at intersections.
  • Truck accidents may involve drivers that are distracted.
  • Truck accidents are more likely to occur during the early morning and late evening hours when visibility is reduced.

Determining liability for any specific truck accident requires a careful examination of the facts. Truck drivers must yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles before entering an intersection. If a police vehicle is in the midst of an emergency with their lights and sirens on, nearby drivers must slow down and yield the right-of-way to that emergency vehicle. Failing to yield the right-of-way to an emergency vehicle may form the basis of a negligence claim.

Steps to Take After Colquitt County Semi-Truck Accidents

Truck accidents remain a major cause of preventable injury or death across Georgia and the United States. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “Eighty-six percent of crashes that involved large trucks were multi-vehicle crashes. Ninety-two percent of serious injuries and 86 percent of all fatalities that involved large trucks occurred in multi-vehicle crashes.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any Georgia truck accident.

  • The police should be called to the scene so that they can begin investigating.
  • Victims should receive a thorough medical evaluation. Many injuries associated with accidents will not be immediately obvious.
  • All of the evidence associated with the crash site should be carefully reviewed. This includes any photos or surveillance footage of the crash.
  • Any person injured due to the negligent actions of a truck driver should seek the guidance of an experienced truck accident attorney.

If the victim of any truck accident was working at the time of a collision, they will typically also have recourse through the workers’ compensation system. This is a no-fault insurance scheme designed to help workers. There is no need for an injured worker to demonstrate that one party was at fault. Victims of truck accidents should consider their legal options with a team experienced in truck accident claims.
