► Will my sexual assault or rape case go to trial? Probably not. The overwhelming majority of all civil cases settle, and that's especially true in sexual assault and rape cases for a few reasons. First, the survivor tends to not want to be public about them. So normally, a survivor may not reject out of hand the idea of going to trial, but it's not something they're eager to do. And then the attackers or the companies that are liable for what has gone wrong tend to not want to go to trial either for a couple reasons. One, they don't want the publicity associated with it. And second, juries can get really irritated about this kind of thing. And the people who are liable tend to be afraid of what the jury might do if the case does go to trial. So settlement of these cases is very common.
► We have tried one of these cases, we had a client who was unusual in that she wanted to be very public about what had happened. She had been molested by her teacher starting when she was just a girl. And she chose, before she even got to me, she had made the decision to be very public about what had happened and why. So she chose to take the case to trial, and we did that for her. We took the case to trial and ended up with a half million dollar verdict in her favor. But that's unusual. We've resolved many sexual assault cases, and a lot of them for sums higher than that. But the plaques about those cases look like this. They don't exist because those clients wanted to be private. And of course, we respect those wishes, too.
