► What kind of compensation is available in a sexual assault or rape case? Does it include therapy bills? Well, yes it does. It includes that and it includes a whole bunch of other stuff as well. We'll talk about a few examples now. But the first thing we'll talk about since it's a question that our office gets asked a lot, is yes, medical bills are a part of the available compensation under Georgia law. And that would include medical bills for physical treatment if that was a part of the case. But importantly, it also includes mental health stuff. Stuff like therapy or trips to a psychiatrist.
► Importantly, that doesn't just mean the past medical bills. Many victims of sexual assault or rape have been affected, are being affected and will be affected for a long time to come, and Georgia law recognizes that. So, the medical bills that are a part of damages are past medical bills, but also future medical bills. So, all right, past and future on the board. But we're not talking about just bills.
► Someone who is a survivor of sexual assault or rape has been through a lot. They've been through a traumatic experience. And that trauma is an element of damages, as we say in the law. So, we'll write trauma on the board. That's something for which survivors can be compensated. And there's also the effect of the sexual assault or rape on the person's life in the broad, general, real sense that survivors experience.
► So, I've written effects on life, and those can be numerous. Sexual assault or rape can affect relationships, feelings, ability to sleep, ability to trust, ability to go out in a crowd, or ability to be alone. If those things are affected, then they're a part of damages under Georgia law. So, they are a part of the available compensation in the sexual assault or rape case.
