► People sometimes call our office and ask if they can report a sexual assault or rape for a friend. And the answer is yes. A friend of the survivor can call to get the ball rolling with our office or maybe with police. Although the hard truth is that if the case is going to go anywhere in the legal system, either the criminal or the civil system, then the survivor's probably going to have to talk at some point. Because no one really knows what happened, quite like the survivor does. And no one really knows what the survivor is going through and has gone through and will go through as a result of the sexual assault or rape, quite like the survivor herself or himself. So yes, a friend or a family member can file the initial report or talk with our office and get the ball rolling. But the hard truth is that eventually if a legal case is going to go forward, the survivor has to play some role.
