Georgia State Patrol Investigating Fatal Chatham County Five-Vehicle Collision Involving Truck on Fort Argyle Road

CHATHAM COUNTY, GEORGIA (July 10, 2026) – At least two people identified as Willie Robinson and Alexandera Thomas have died and three other people were injured in a five-vehicle collision involving a truck along Fort Argyle Road.

Chatham County officials are saying that the incident occurred on Thursday. According to one preliminary report of the collision, a tractor-trailer truck was heading eastbound on GA 204 when a Subaru crossed the center line.

The truck sideswiped the Subaru before colliding with a Mazda. It was at this point that the truck crossed into westbound lanes of traffic before hitting a Ford Flex and a Chevrolet.

Both the tractor-trailer truck and the Ford Flex became engulfed in flames after the crash. Firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene of the collision to help all of the victims.

At least one person was trapped inside of their vehicle and had to be extricated. EMS also attended to one person who was ejected from their vehicle.

Sadly, Willie Robinson and Alexandera Thomas both died following the collision. Three other people were injured. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Liability for Chatham County Truck Accidents 

Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate their vehicles with the utmost caution at all times. Pursuant to GA Code § 40-6-48, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Truck companies should take certain actions to help minimize the risk of accidents.

• Training: Truck companies should ensure that all of their drivers are well trained and properly certified for the specific rig they will be handling.
• Technology: Truck companies should consider adopting certain technological features that are known to reduce accidents, including forward collision avoidance systems.
• Enforcement: Truck companies should heavily enforce all safety regulations required by law. This includes ensuring that their drivers get enough rest.
• Maintenance: Truck companies should ensure their vehicles are periodically inspected and maintained.

When evaluating whether or not a truck driver will be held liable for any crash, it matters how they reacted immediately prior to the crash and during the crash. Even if a truck driver did not necessarily do anything to contribute to an initial collision, they could still be liable if they caused a secondary collision due to negligence. For example, this may occur if a truck driver overcorrects and enters into opposing lanes of traffic.

Additional Sources of Liability for Chatham County Truck Accidents

Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in preventable car accidents in Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “In 2021, there were 1,797 fatalities that occurred in motor vehicle traffic crashes on Georgia roadways – the largest number of traffic fatalities since 2006.” There could be several sources of liability for a truck accident beyond any one specific driver determined to be at fault.

• Liability could be shared among several different drivers, particularly if a vehicle entered into opposing lanes of traffic.
• The company that employed the truck driver could also be held at fault for a collision. As a general rule, employers can be held vicariously liable for the negligent actions of their workers.
• The freight company that hired a trucking service could bear some level of responsibility if the trucking company involved had a history of collisions or infractions that made them unsafe.
• The company that manufactured a commercial truck or its component parts could also be on the hook if a truck malfunctioned prior to a crash.

Driving a commercial truck is substantially more difficult than driving a passenger vehicle. A fully loaded truck can weigh 80,000 pounds. Their drivers must always be alert and ready to take action. Unfortunately, it is relatively common for truck companies to put a great amount of pressure on their truck drivers. This can lead to them adopting unsafe driving habits that endanger the lives of everyone on the roadway.

Investigating Chatham County Truck Accidents
