A plane tire suddenly exploded at the shop. It remains unclear if it was being worked on when it exploded. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help all of the victims.
Sadly, two men died due to their injuries, and a third was seriously injured before being taken to the hospital. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Liability For Airplane Tire Explosion Accidents
Despite many years of improved workplace safety standards, thousands of workers are killed or seriously injured every year. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, “There were 5,486 fatal work injuries recorded in the United States in 2022, a 5.7-percent increase from 5,190 in 2021, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The fatal work injury rate was 3.7 fatalities per 100,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers, up from 3.6 per 100,000 FTE in 2021.” Working on airplanes can be particularly dangerous. There are a number of hazards that airline maintenance workers face.
- Workers can be exposed to a number of chemical hazards.
- Workers are often required to lift heavy objects and perform similar tasks over and over again. This can lead to stress injuries.
- Workers can be seriously injured or killed if they fall from heights.
- Workers can be crushed by heavy pieces of machinery.
When a worker is killed or injured in Georgia, they or their family may be able to seek support through a worker’s compensation claim. Workers’ compensation operates off of a no-fault insurance scheme in Georgia. When a worker is injured, they will typically have access to worker’s compensation, regardless of who was at fault. In addition to a worker’s compensation claim, the family of a deceased worker may have recourse through a third-party liability claim.
There could be numerous sources of third-party liability for an airplane tire explosion. In particular, the company that manufactured the tire could be held at fault. Airplane tires are put under an enormous amount of pressure when they are inflated. Any defect with the tire could potentially cause an explosion. For example, defects in the chemical bonding process could lead a tire to have weak spots. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any airplane accident.
- Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
- The airplane and tire involved in the accident should be reviewed.
- Surveillance footage should be sought.
- Medical records related to the incident should be preserved.
The vast majority of workplace accidents are preventable. They tend to occur when companies take shortcuts in order to save money. Sadly, though, employers and product manufacturers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if a worker in their care is injured or killed. This is why it is so important for workers and their families to understand that they do have rights. The family of any person that is killed in a workplace accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
