Two People Killed in Butts County Accident With Commercial Vehicle
Commercial Vehicle Transporting Concrete Involved in Fatal Butts County Crash on Interstate 75

BUTTS COUNTY, GEORGIA (May 28, 2026) – Two people have died in a Butts County car accident on Interstate 75 northbound, just south of the Georgia Highway 16 exit.
Butts County officials are saying that the collision occurred around Friday afternoon. A commercial vehicle carrying concrete failed to stop for backed-up traffic.
That vehicle collided with a white SUV, which caused a chain-reaction collision. A rear passenger in the white SUV died as a result of their injuries.
One other person reportedly died in the crash, though it is unclear which vehicle they were in. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Liability for Butts County Car Accidents
Most people who are operating commercial vehicles are required to obtain a commercial license. They are expected to operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they maintain a safe speed and follow distance at all times. According to GA Code § 40-6-49, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” Multiple factors could contribute to any freeway collisions in Georgia.
- Speed: Drivers are much more likely to be involved in collisions if they are traveling at an unsafe speed for the prevailing road conditions.
- Fatigue: Another major contributing factor is fatigue. It is relatively common for truck carriers to push their drivers to work at odd hours and for extended periods.
- Inclement Weather: Poor weather conditions can substantially increase the amount of time it takes for any driver to bring the vehicle to a safe stop.
If the driver of a truck or other commercial vehicle fails to slow down and rear-end a car, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that hits the rear of a vehicle in their own lane of traffic. These types of accidents are nearly always the result of drivers that were speeding or following the lead vehicle too closely. The company that any truck driver worked for could also be held at fault. Employers can typically be liable for the negligent actions of their workers who are operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
Steps to Take After Butts County Truck Accidents
Trucks account for a relatively small number of the total vehicles on the roadway. But they’re involved in a disproportionately high number of serious injury collisions. According to the NHTSA, “there were approximately 120,000 fatal and injury crashes nationwide during the 33-month study period that involved at least one large truck; 141,000 large trucks were involved in those crashes.” It is important that certain steps are taken after any accident with a commercial vehicle.
- The police report created after the accident should be reviewed. These reports can be very helpful, but they can still contain errors.
- If a truck was involved, any data from the event data recorder should be preserved.
- It should be determined if the commercial vehicle driver was working at the time of the collision.
- The family of any person killed in an accident should seek an independent review by a team experienced in accident claims.
Commercial trucks can weigh 80,000 lbs. They can be extremely dangerous even at lower speeds. Truck companies often push their drivers to complete delivery routes as quickly as possible. This can lead to truck drivers adopting unsafe habits. Victims of truck accidents are protected by a number of laws. In particular, the family of any person killed in a truck accident is able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
