Georgia Highway Patrol Investigating Fatal Crisp County Collision After Semi-Truck Rear-ended Another Vehicle

CRISP COUNTY, GEORGIA (September 1, 2026) – A man has tragically died after being struck by a tractor-trailer truck in Crisp County along Interstate 75.

Crisp County officials are saying that the collision occurred around 5:30 AM on August 22 near mile marker 94. Authorities believe that a tractor-trailer may have struck the rear of a vehicle and pedestrian, thereby forcing it off the roadway.

That collision caused the passenger vehicle to subsequently catch fire. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim.

He was transported to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany to receive treatment. Unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Crisp County Semi-Truck Accidents

Drivers in Georgia have a legal obligation to exercise due care and use reasonable precautions to avoid colliding with pedestrians and other vehicles that they encounter under GA Code § 40-6-93. This requires drivers to maintain a safe speed at all times and keep a proper lookout. Drivers must be particularly cautious upon observing any person in the roadway who is obviously confused or otherwise incapacitated. A driver was traveling roughly 50 mph when they were involved in a collision with a pedestrian who was lying in the center of the roadway. In that case, the Georgia court held that the state’s pedestrian safety law requires drivers to use care to avoid hitting people in the roadway when their presence could reasonably be discovered.

Pedestrians are uniquely vulnerable to the hazards posed by large commercial trucks. They lack the protections of enclosed vehicles and are much more likely to be overlooked in the first place. According to one report by the FMCSA, there were 533 pedestrians killed in crashes involving large trucks in the year 2022 alone. Truck drivers and truck companies should take several measures to avoid these types of collisions.

• Truck companies should ensure that their drivers are taking periodic rest breaks as required under federal law.
• Truck companies should consider equipping their vehicles with forward collision avoidance systems.
• Truck drivers should be particularly cautious during periods of inclement weather or reduced visibility.
• Truck drivers should continuously scan the road ahead of them for pedestrians and other potential hazards.

Truck collisions are nearly always preventable. They tend to involve situations where one or more drivers are not traveling at a safe speed or are otherwise committing traffic infractions. Part of the problem is that carriers routinely put an enormous amount of pressure on their drivers to complete routes as quickly as possible. This can lead to unacceptable safety compromises that manifest through poor driving habits. The family of any person who died in a truck collision may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
