WALTON COUNTY, GEORGIA (May 13, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a Walton County car accident along State Route 20.
Walton County officials are saying that the accident took place on Monday night. A pedestrian was attempting to cross the roadway when they were struck by a pickup truck hauling a trailer.
Paramedics were called to the site of the crash to help the victim. Sadly, the pedestrian was beyond medical aid and pronounced dead at the scene.
A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Every driver in Georgia has a legal obligation to exercise due care to avoid colliding with pedestrians in the roadway. This requires that they constantly scan ahead of them and maintain a safe speed at all times. According to GA Code § 40-6-180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing.” Several factors could contribute to any pedestrian collision.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian in the roadway, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Even if a pedestrian is crossing the road against the flow of traffic, this does not relieve a driver of their duty to slow down and take evasive action. Liability for a pedestrian crash could extend beyond any specific driver. This is particularly true if a pickup truck were being used for some type of commercial purpose.
Far too many pedestrians are seriously injured or killed each year in the state of Georgia. According to the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “The number of pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes has nearly doubled in the past decade and increased by 12%, from 307 pedestrian fatalities in 2021 to 345 in 2022. There was an average of 25 bicyclist fatalities in traffic crashes per year between 2018-2022.” Multiple actions should be taken after any pedestrian fatality.
Pedestrian accidents tend to be highly preventable. They often involve situations where drivers are not paying attention to the road ahead of them. Unfortunately, drivers and their insurance providers will almost never accept responsibility when a pedestrian is killed. They are more likely to blame the victim for what happened. This is why it is so important that these incidents are properly investigated by an outside party.
We at Butler Kahn extend our deepest condolences to the family of the pedestrian killed in this crash. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. How fast was this driver going before the crash? Did they attempt to slow down? What is the history of car accidents along this stretch of road?
