Bus Driver Arrested After Several Students Hospitalized From Barrow County School Bus Crash on Georgia 211 Near Raymond Drive
BARROW COUNTY, GEORGIA (August 17, 2026) – At least six students were injured in a Barrow County school bus accident along Georgia 211 by Raymond Drive.
Barrow County officials are saying that the incident occurred on Wednesday morning. The school bus was heading down the road when it overturned into a ditch.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. A total of six students were hospitalized in the crash.
Remaining students were taken to school or left with their parents. The school bus driver involved in the collision is currently facing charges related to the incident.
Under Georgia law, all drivers have a legal obligation to use reasonable care to avoid collisions with other vehicles. School bus drivers are considered common carriers and are expected to operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. Among other things, they must maintain their vehicle safely within a single lane of traffic. According to GA Code § 40-6-48, “A vehicle shall be driven as nearly as practicable entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety.” Investigators will examine many different factors when evaluating liability for school bus collisions.
If a school bus driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a vehicle, this could be construed as negligence. The private municipal entity that a school bus driver worked for could also potentially be responsible for a collision. Consider, for example, Tift County School District v. Martinez, 331 Ga. App. 423 (Georgia Court of Appeals 2015). A student was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a road as a school bus stopped and activated its warning signals. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the school district and bus driver failed to follow established safety policies. In particular, they allegedly did not adequately supervise the student and exercise reasonable care as he crossed the road.
School buses are typically very safe for their passengers. But their high center of gravity makes them particularly susceptible to rollover collisions. According to one report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were approximately 971 fatal school-transportation-related collisions over a 10-year period that they looked at. Around 113 of those fatalities were occupants of the school transportation vehicle. Several pieces of evidence should be preserved after any school bus collision.
School bus collisions tend to be highly preventable in many different situations. They are often the results of drivers that are not paying sufficient attention to the road ahead of them. Unfortunately, school districts and their insurance providers are not likely to accept legal responsibility if they cause an accident that injures multiple children. This is why it’s so important that victims carefully consider their legal options with an experienced attorney.
