Multiple Students Hospitalized in Barrow County School Bus Accident

School Bus Driver Cited for Crash Along Georgia 211 in Barrow County That Sent Six Students to Hospital

BARROW COUNTY, GEORGIA (September 7, 2026) – At least six students were hospitalized in a Barrow County school bus accident along Georgia 211 near Raymond Drive.

Barrow County officials are saying that the incident occurred on Wednesday. The school bus driver was heading down Georgia 211 when they began entering a slight curve in the roadway.

The right side of the wheels traveled off the pavement and onto the shoulder before the school bus overturned. Over 30 students were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Six of those students were transported to local area hospitals to receive treatment. This accident comes roughly 16 months after the bus driver was involved in another collision with a stopped vehicle.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims. A total of six students were transported to the hospital to receive treatments.

Liability for Barrow County School Bus Accidents

School bus drivers are considered common carriers in Georgia and are expected to operate with a great deal of caution to avoid collisions that would injure their passengers. Moreover, O.C.G.A. § 51-1-2 requires the drivers to exercise due care to avoid any collision that would cause injury. Bus drivers must slow down when necessary and not travel faster than would be safe given the prevailing conditions that they encounter. Courts will take into consideration numerous factors when evaluating liability for any school bus accident.

  • They will consider the speed of the bus prior to any collision.
  • They will consider whether or not a bus driver maintained their lane position before losing control of the bus.
  • They will consider all maintenance records related to the care and upkeep of the bus.
  • They will consider visibility conditions and weather at the time of the accident.

If a bus driver fails to use reasonable care to avoid collisions, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Consider, for example, Tift County School District v. Martinez, 331 Ga. App. 423 (2015). A child was crossing the roadway to board a stopped school bus when he was hit by an approaching vehicle under heavy fog conditions. Attorneys for the plaintiff argued that the bus driver and school district failed to follow safety policies related to boarding students.

How School Districts Can Prevent School Bus Accidents

School buses are typically very safe for their passengers. But they also have a high center of gravity, which leaves them more susceptible to rollover accidents. Many students are injured in collisions involving school buses each year. According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 110 people nationwide in 2024, down 14% compared to the 128 deaths in 2023, according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” There are many steps that school districts can take to prevent bus accidents.

  • School districts should ensure that all of their bus drivers are properly vetted and undergo background checks.
  • School districts must ensure that bus drivers are adequately trained to follow all safety procedures.
  • School districts should not employ bus drivers that have a demonstrated history of accidents or unsafe driving.
  • School districts should carefully monitor and evaluate the conduct of the bus drivers they employ.

School bus accidents can be incredibly dangerous for those involved. Victims often sustain very serious injuries, including broken bones and head trauma. Any student injured in the crash may need to take extensive periods of time away from school. This can seriously impact their ability to progress in their studies. Unfortunately, school districts are not likely to accept responsibility when one of their drivers is involved in a collision. Any person injured in a school bus collision may have legal recourse through a civil action.
