DEKALB COUNTY, GEORGIA (May 23, 2026) – A female pedestrian has tragically died in a DeKalb County car accident along Interstate 85 by Northcrest Road.
DeKalb County officials are saying that the accident occurred around 2:31 AM on Wednesday. A pedestrian may have been running along the freeway when they were struck by a pickup.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim. Police closed multiple lanes of the freeway as they continued their investigation.
Liability for DeKalb County Truck Accidents
Every driver in Georgia must use caution to avoid colliding with pedestrians and other vehicles. This requires that they maintain a safe speed at all times. According to GA Code § 40-6-180, “No person shall drive a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard for the actual and potential hazards then existing.” There are many other ways that a truck driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting any pedestrian.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. Even if a pedestrian were in the middle of a road outside of a crosswalk, this does not absolve a driver of their duty of care to slow down and avoid a crash. Depending on the specific facts of any case, liability for a crash extends to several different parties. This includes any company that may have owned or operated a truck or other vehicle.
Many pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in preventable car accidents across the state of Georgia. According to the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, “In 2022, there were 345 pedestrians fatally injured in traffic crashes, a 12% increase from the 307 pedestrian fatalities in 2021. • Similar to previous years, more than half of all pedestrian crashes occurred within the Atlanta region (56%).” Certain options should be taken after any pedestrian accident in Georgia.
Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be seriously injured or killed in the event of a crash. This is why it is so important that drivers are being vigilant at all times, even at night. Unfortunately, many drivers are more concerned with getting to their destination as quickly as possible than upholding the law. The family of any person who died in a DeKalb County pedestrian accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at Butler Kahn extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong so that other tragedies can be prevented.
