Bruce Bartenfelder, 83, from Florida, Died in Collision With Tractor-Trailer Truck on Interstate 20 Eastbound Near Exit 101
NEWTON COUNTY, GEORGIA (July 30, 2026) – An 83-year-old man identified as Bruce Bartenfelder has tragically died in a Newton County semi-truck accident along Interstate 20.
Newton County officials are saying that the incident occurred around 4:15 AM on Thursday morning. Bruce Bartenfelder was traveling with his wife when they experienced some sort of mechanical problem with the boat they were transporting.
He pulled over to the shoulder of the roadway and exited the vehicle before being struck by a tractor-trailer. EMS were called to the scene of the collision to help the injured victim.
Sadly, Bruce Bartenfelder was beyond medical assistance and pronounced deceased at the scene. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Truck drivers are required to obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate within an abundance of caution to avoid causing accidents. According to O.C.G.A. § 40-6-93, “Notwithstanding other provisions of this chapter, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian upon any roadway, shall give warning by sounding his horn when necessary, and shall exercise proper precautions upon observing any child or any obviously confused, incapacitated, or intoxicated person.” There are many different ways that a truck driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting a pedestrian.
If a truck driver fails to take small precautions to avoid hitting a pedestrian in the roadway, they could be held legally responsible through a negligence claim. In many cases, liability for a truck collision could extend to several different parties. This includes any company that may have owned a truck involved in a collision. It may also include a freight broker. The United States Supreme Court has held that freight brokers can be responsible for collisions if they hire truck companies with poor safety records.
Pedestrians lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are uniquely vulnerable to hazards posed by large commercial trucks. According to one report by the National Highway Transportation Safety Association, “Anywhere from double to triple the risk of fatality for the pedestrian has been correlated to crashes with light trucks when compared to crashes with passenger vehicles (Hu & Klinich, 2012).” Several actions should be taken after a Newton County truck accident.
Truck accidents are routinely some of the worst events that many people will go through in their life. It is relatively common for victims to sustain life-altering injuries. Sadly, far too many victims never survive these crashes. To make matters worse, truck companies are not likely to admit fault if they cause a fatal collision. However, victims are protected by a number of laws. They may be able to pursue accountability through a wrongful death claim.
We at Butler Kahn extend our deepest condolences to the family of Bruce Bartenfelder. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong for the sake of the victim’s family. Important questions have yet to be answered. What was the speed of the semi-truck driver involved? Is there a history of collisions along this stretch of road?
