We want to accomplish as much good with the money as possible, so we pay close attention to where we send our hard-earned dollars. It\u2019s a concept that Peter Singer called \u201ceffective altruism,\u201d and it means focusing more on the money\u2019s destination than on its source. In other words, we think harder about where the money could do the most good for people who desperately need it, and less about our own whims. We want to make it about them, not us.\n \nEvery year someone asks us, \u201cwhy not give to charities here at home?\u201d We think it\u2019s a good question, and we created this video to answer it. If you\u2019re more into reading than watching, here\u2019s the answer in text: bang for the buck. Although we have serious social problems and people in need right here at home, problems are objectively worse, and solutions are objectively cheaper, in the developing world. For example, the Against Malaria Foundation combats the spread of malaria in the developing world by distributing long-lasting insecticidal nets (\u201cLLINs\u201d) that people sleep under to avoid being bitten by malaria-carrying mosquitoes. Each net costs $5. Evidence Action\u2019s \u201cDeworm the World Initiative\u201d fights worms in children by distributing deworming medicine. Each dose costs $0.66. The Carter Center (which is based in Atlanta) fights river blindness, in which flies lay eggs in the eyes and cause the loss of sight. The cure costs $100.\n \nYou can\u2019t get that kind of bang for your buck in the United States. For all of our problems, we do not have widespread deaths from malaria that could be prevented with $5 nets, children living with worms that could be cured or prevented for $0.66 per dose, or blind people whose sight could be restored for $100. And if you believe that all lives have equal value \u2013 in other words, that someone else\u2019s life isn\u2019t worth less just because they were born in a different country \u2013 then the conclusion seemed clear.\n \nThis isn\u2019t a conclusion that we set out to reach. Subjectively, it would be really nice if we could drive down the streets of Atlanta, Georgia and look at a school that we helped to build, or meet a family that we helped to feed and clothe. But when we looked at the issues objectively and dug into the data, we concluded that if we were serious about doing the most good that we could with the dollars that we had, our money was going to end up going to the developing world.
